LB LAVONTE DAVID – NEBRASKA – 6-1, 233
2-year starter after coming to Nebraska from JC. Impact player from Day One. Led the Huskers in tackles both years and was Top 20 nationally (11th in 2011). Also a playmaker. How many guys can say they had 11.5 sacks, 10 PBUs, and 3 FFs in just 2 seasons? Posted huge numbers in 2011. Had 2 INTs, 5.5 sacks, 3 FFs, 12 TFLs, and 133 total tackles.
At his best playing off and then attacking, but he is a physical player. Good hitter and tackler. Has some real pop. Wraps up and takes his targets down aggressively. Struggles with taking on blockers, but spent a lot of time in Mobile working with coaches on that so he knows it’s an issue. Aggressive player who isn’t afraid to throw his body around. Very active.
Could bulk up to the 235 range. Played most of the season in the 225 range. Showed up at the Combine at 233 pounds, likely to show he could get that big and still post good workout numbers.
Good cover skills. At his best vs TEs. Has the speed to run with them. Picked off a pass to TE vs Washington by undercutting the route. Is comfortable playing in space. Shows good awareness when dealing with WRs on crossing routes.
David really impressed me at the Senior Bowl. He went down there to learn, improve, and show what he could do. That was the best I’ve seen him all year. At Nebraska he played behind a 2-gap set of DTs that kept him clean. The Senior Bowl challenged him to play up on the LOS and be more physical. David did just that. Also covered well. Good week of practice and game. Had a solid showing at the Combine. Isn’t an elite athlete, but he he’s above average.
I think David is more of a WLB, but in today’s NFL, never say never. Could play SAM in the right system. I think of him as a 2nd round player. There is a lot to like about him, but he’s still light in the saddle and that does make me a little nervous with a LB.
